Introduce#
Many tourists visiting China link non-UnionPay bank cards, such as Visa or Mastercard, to their Alipay accounts. However, when you spend more than 200 RMB, Alipay charges a transaction fee. If you exchange foreign currencies like euros or dollars into RMB and top up your Alipay balance, any purchases made using the RMB balance will not incur any transaction fees, regardless of the amount spent.
How to top up#
- Register for an iFAST GB e-wallet (a UK-based digital bank), and top up your iFAST wallet via SWIFT or FPS. Then, use the EzWallet remittance feature to transfer RMB to your Alipay balance. The transfer typically takes around 7 days. Please note that iFAST has temporarily suspended the remittance service to Alipay, so kindly wait for it to resume.

- Purchase cryptocurrency (USDT) using your local currency, and sell the USDT on a crypto exchange to exchange it for RMB, which can then be topped up into your Alipay account. On the exchange, select a buyer who supports Alipay. After selling your USDT to the buyer, provide them with your Alipay account details, and they will transfer the equivalent amount of RMB to your Alipay balance, Instant transfer.
